Dr. Ambuel is Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he is Director of Research and Behavioral Science Education at Waukesha Family Practice Residency. The Waukesha Family Practice Clinic provides primary health care to over 8,000 patients in the Waukesha community. The clinic provides health care to all, regardless of ability to pay, and is the primary source of health care for low-income and Hispanic people in the Waukesha community.
Dr. Ambuel is an expert in health psychology as well as community research and action. The focus of his current work is the primary and secondary prevention of partner violence through the health care system, and developing community partnerships to promote health in underserved and marginalized communities. He has conducted research and published on the health care response to intimate partner violence, treatment decision making, informed consent and competence to consent, pain assessment and management, and training physicians to respond effectively to psychosocial problems including partner violence, and death and dying.
Dr. Ambuel's research on community health and the health care response to intimate partner violence has been supported by numerous grants from the Wisconsin Office of Justice Assistance, Wisconsin AHEC, United States Health Resource Services Administration, Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program, and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He is first author of an award-winning curriculum, The Family Peace Project, which trains health care professionals to identify and intervene with victims of partner violence. Dr. Ambuel created and chairs the Intimate Partner Violence Research Interest Group at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is currently conducting research on changing the culture of health care clinics to improve the response to victims of intimate partner violence, and studying whether interventions in the health care setting lead to long term improvements in the health and well being of abused women.
Dr. Ambuel has received numerous awards for his research and community outreach. He was founding chair of the
Waukesha County Family Peace Initiative, a community-wide initiative to end family violence and promote family peace in Waukesha County, and a founding member of the Waukesha County Health Council, an organization which strives to improve the health status of Waukesha County citizens. He serves on the ProHealth Care Community Benefit Committee. He was Principal Investigator on a grant from the Healthier Wisconsin Foundation which organized a community coalition that developed a strategic plan and business plan to create the Waukesha County Community Dental Clinic, a new non-profit that provides education, preventive dental care and basic dental treatment to children and adults in need.
